Step 1: Fly to Athens

Sifnos does not have its own airport, so your first step is to fly into Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) — airport code ATH.

From Athens, you have 2 options:
1) stay overnight in downtown Athens and enjoy the sights

2) head straight to Piraeus Port, then take a ferry to Sifnos (details below).

We recommend flying into Athens the day before your ferry to allow for delays and stress-free travel.

Step 2: From Athens Airport to Downtown Athens

🚆 1. Train / Metro (Recommended – Around 45 Minutes)

  • Take the Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) that will go to downtown Athens (Syntagma, Monastiraki stations - these stations best for the The Acropolis area)

  • Travel time to Monastiraki Station is 43-45 minutes; Syntagma shorter as it's the stop before Monastiraki
  • Cost is 9 euros one-way

🚌 2. Express Bus X96 (Budget Option – 40–70 Minutes)

  • Use the X95 Airport Express bus, which runs 24/7 and takes you to Syntagma Square.

  • Buses are frequent, departing every 15-20 minutes during the day and every 20-30 minutes at night, with a travel time of about 40-70 minutes depending on traffic.

  • The cost is approximately €5.50, making it a cheap and convenient option

🚖 3. Taxi or Uber (Fastest but Most Expensive)

  • Direct ride from the airport to the port

  • Takes about 45–60 minutes

  • Fixed daytime rate: ~€40–50 (more at night)

  • Good if you're in a group or carrying luggage

Step 3: Ferry to Sifnos

Ferries to Sifnos depart from Piraeus Port and travel times vary from 2.5 hours to 5 hours - depending on the vessel

From downtown Athens,  you can take Metro GREEN LINE for Piraeus Port - travel time 20-25 minutes  OR Uber/Taxi that will take you closest to your gate

📌 Tip: Book ferries early and try not to plan a same-day flight + ferry unless you have plenty of extra time

📌 Tip: Check the gate number for your ferry at Piraeus and get there 1 hour before sailing time

📌 Tip: If taking the Metro (GREEN LINE) give yourself at least 20 minutes to walk to your gate

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I do a day trip to other islands from Sifnos?

Because of how the inter-island ferry schedule works, the only realistic island you can visit for the day is Milos. For now, there is a ferry that leaves Sifnos around 10 am, arrives in Milos 45 minutes later, and then departs Milos back to Sifnos around 1500.  But check the ferry schedule around June 206 to make sure the timings are still accurate. And there may be more potential destinations available. So in theory you have an estimate 3-4 hours to see Milos without having to rush around too much. Perhaps one of the biggest attractions in Milos is Sarakiniko Beach which you can visit during your day trip.

When do I book my hotel/apartment?

As early as January 2026. The hotels in our list are popular among repeat guests who tend to come around mid-September and they start making their bookings as early as January.

Can I stay outside Kamares?

Definitely! The brilliant thing about Sifnos is that there are many places to stay everywhere. If you prefer inland and mountain views, Apollonia and Artemonas and Kastro are ideal places. Apollonia is the capital and therefore it has more shops, cafes, tavernas and bars. And apparently has a much livelier night life!

The Obamas who were guests of Hollywood couple Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (they live in adjacent Antiparos island). were spotted dining in Kastro.

Platis Gialos has upscale accommodation with a nice beach and top-notch restaurants.  Just ask Jeff Bezos!

Vathi also has lovely tavernas and offers more upscale accommodation.

And will I need a car if I’m staying outside Kamares?
It’s advisable so you’re not in the mercy of the public buses. Plenty of rental car companies in Kamaresso make sure you book ahead. These rental car companies are located not too far from where the ferry docks.

Which places in Greece are worth visiting before and/or after Sifnos?

Greece is a gift that keeps giving! If you’re looking for places near Athens, check out the tips in About Athens section.

Farther and if you have more days to spare and happy to drive, definitely explore the Peloponnese Region.

Or from Sifnos, you can take the ferry to Santorini, although personally I am not a fan as I think there are more beautiful and less crowded islands. Take Folegandros, a very picturesque island where the Chora (capital) is up in the mountains and offers exciting hiking possibilities. You can also make your way to Crete but might have to change ferries in Santorini. Check Ferryhopper for destinations and schedule.

When is everyone arriving in Sifnos?

Angie and Clausie will aim to be in Sifnos on Monday, September 14 and stay there until the next Tuesday, September 22.

Don’t forget - cocktails on Thursday, September 17,  wedding (by special invitation only) on Friday, September 18 and birthday fiesta on Saturday, September 19.

How many nights should I spend in Athens?

Really depends on the pace you want to move. And the ferry schedule. If your flight lands in the morning and you think you can catch an afternoon ferry to Sifnos, then by all means skip Athens and go straight to Piraeus Port from the airport. But make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to go from airport to port.
But if you’re not in a rush and have not been to Athens before, then by all means stay overnight in Athens. Plenty of information in the About Athens section, including discounted rooms.

You can also choose to explore Athens and beyond after partying in Sifnos.

Am I invited to the wedding?
The wedding is for close family only. So if you don’t know Rica or Mark, then you’ve got that Friday night to enjoy Sifnos’ night life and prepare for Angie’s birthday party the next day.
